What does an osteopath do?

An osteopath is a registered health professional who diagnoses and treats pain and movement problems affecting muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissues. Osteopaths take a whole-body approach, considering how different areas of the body interact and contribute to pain.

At TLC Osteopaths in Hamilton, treatment may include hands-on techniques, movement advice, exercise prescription, and education to help you recover safely and confidently.

Our Hamilton osteopaths commonly help with:

  • Back pain and sciatica

  • Neck pain and headaches

  • Jaw (TMJ) pain

  • Shoulder, hip, and knee pain

  • Sports and gym-related injuries

Is osteopathy covered by ACC in New Zealand?

Yes. Osteopathy is an ACC-registered treatment in New Zealand.

If your pain or injury is related to an accident (including gradual process injuries), we can lodge an ACC claim for you during your appointment where appropriate.

What happens at my first osteopathy appointment?

Your first appointment is 40 minutes and includes:

  1. A detailed discussion about your symptoms and history

  2. Assessment of movement, joints, muscles, and nerves

  3. Clear explanation of what we think is contributing to your pain

  4. Hands-on treatment (if appropriate)

  5. Advice or exercises tailored to your recovery

  6. A realistic discussion about expected recovery time

Our goal is that you leave understanding what’s going on, what helps, and what to do next.

Does osteopathic treatment hurt?

Osteopathic treatment is generally gentle and adapted to your comfort level.

Some techniques may feel unfamiliar or mildly uncomfortable at times, but treatment should never feel forced. We always explain what we’re doing and adjust our approach based on your preferences.

Do you use spinal manipulation?

Spinal manipulation is one of many tools osteopaths may use.

At TLC Osteopaths, manipulation is only used when appropriate and only if you’re comfortable with it. Many patients are treated successfully without manipulation

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the condition, how long symptoms have been present, and individual factors.

Many people notice improvement within 1–3 sessions, while others with persistent or complex issues may need a longer-term plan. We aim to be transparent and realistic about this from the outset.

Can osteopathy help during pregnancy?
